ROMANIAN ARTWORKS

PERSPECTIVES - Adrian Barbu

One of my favorites; it's a play on the idea of different worlds/times/points of view, and the first-person caught between them. At the time, 2004 I think, this was exactly my situation: physically living in the left half of the picture (post-communist Romania), mentally projected in impossible future dreams. Here's the result.

GENESIS - Adrian Barbu

God created Man; Man created the Machine; then Man destroyed Man. Could the Machine ever re-create an image of humanity out of ancient reminiscences of memory, long after our extinction? Could it sense the meaning of beauty, harmony, or of the lost Paradise?

HARMONY- Adrian Barbu

Another play about difference and likeness. Hands always fascinated me, not only as biomechanic instruments, but also because of their intrinsic beauty and expressiveness. Beginning with (and from) the human hand, I tried analog, though not identical configurations.

EXPERIMENT 451 - Adrian Barbu

Picture

Although this title is a tribute to Ray Bradbury, the image itself has nothing to do with Fahrenheit 451. I thought about a possible, dark future, mutants created by mislead genetic experiments, and maybe something nuclear that went wrong. Sadness, desolation, but also a spot of light, a spark of hope. Maybe the next ruling race will prove wiser than we are...

SCIENCE FICTION - Adrian Barbu

It would be difficult - and useless - to comment about this one. Being a sci-fi fan myself, I enjoyed thinking it, drawing it, and still like it a lot.

META-MUSIC - Adrian Barbu

What if music wasn't only a matter of sounds, as we know it?   I imagine non-human life, perception and intelligence forms who might feel music through different senses: as visible radiation, smell, tactile impressions; touching one's skin and bones, every brain cell and his very physical structure, a music more complete, more absolute than anything else we know.

METALORGANIC 3 - Adrian Barbu

Another one on the same tune: the combination/melting of organic and mechanic, superposed over a musical theme. Just, which one's the player and which one's the instrument?

COMPREHENSION - Adrian Barbu

Picture
Comprehension between humans seems sometimes so difficult; would it be then impossible to understand the OTHER? The DIFFERENT? The ALIEN? Isn't every one of us an alien to all the others, by the fact of his uniqueness? Thinking about this, you might realize that sci-fi doesn't talk about future, or far-far away galaxies, or alien species, but about Here and Now and Us.
